Kaynan Duarte Returns to IBJJF Competition After Doping Suspension

Kaynan Duarte makes his IBJJF return at NoGi Pan Ams after serving his IBJJF suspension for doping.

On Feburary 7th 2020, Kaynan Duarte was served a competition suspension by USADA after testing positive for trace amounts of the banned performance enhancer Ostarine.

Kaynan’s suspension is backdated from last year’s IBJJF World Championship, where he won gold and was thusly stripped of his title. Kayan was the 7th athlete to be caused by USADA’s anti-doping policy, where previously banned athletes include Braulio Estima, Gabi Garcia, Felipe Pena, Paulo Miyao, Leo Nogueira and Tayane Porfirio.

From USADA’s page (link here):

Ostarine, also known as MK-2866 and Enobosarm, is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that is illegally sold worldwide as a performance-enhancing substance. Ostarine is not currently available as a prescription medication in any country, and its unauthorized use may carry serious side effects. Nonetheless, ostarine has commonly been found as a declared and undeclared ingredient in many dietary supplements. Duarte received a one-year reduction to his period of ineligibility because after a thorough review of the evidence and cooperation from Duarte, USADA determined that the trace amount of ostarine detected in his sample was consistent with exposure to ostarine via cross-contamination. Additionally, a WADA-accredited laboratory confirmed a product possessed by a person close to Duarte contained ostarine, as listed on the product label, that could have been the source of the cross-contamination.

A Mighty Return

However, due to the findings of Duarte’s usage was deemed unintentional his suspension was reduced from 4 years to just 1 year, and thanks to the recently COVID-19 restrictions and lack of competitions, it looks like he’s not missed out on much!

Now Kaynan is looking to make his fabled return to the IBJJF mats for the upcoming NoGi Pan American Championships due to be held in Atlanta Georgia.

He will be accompanied by fellow ATOS teammates Josh Hinger, Jonnatas Gracie, Michael Liera Jr, Lucas Barbosa and many more.

The IBJJF NoGi Pan Americans will happen on November 13th in Atlanta, Georgia.
