Differences in Gi’s
Don’t be confused with a Jiu-Jitsu Gi, a Judo Gi and a Brazilian Jitsu gi. A Jiu-Jitsu gi is made from a single piece of cotton fabric is is not to be designed to be grabbed and pulled extensively. There is a similarity to BJJ and Judo gi’s, they are both made from a weaved fabric that is designed not to tear when pulled and manipulated. Judo gi’s are made from a thicker weave that is designed to be more withstanding, where are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi’s are more tailored to make it more difficult to grip.
When you buy a jiu-jitsu gi ninety-per cent of the time you will buy a product made from cotton. While cotton itself isn’t an incredibly strong material, the way a kimono is weaved and constructed is incredibly strong. When looking at you first BJJ Gi, look for a kimono jacket, which has a pearl weave. A pearl weave is a more modern weave which combines the lightweight feel of a single weave with the strength of a gold weave.
The trousers of a kimono can be made from cotton or ripstop, which is a woven combination of nylon and cotton, designed to be indestructible. Trousers are also commonly found made out of the cotton drill, which is a thicker type of cotton.
Most BJJ gi’s are made with a pearl or single weave fabric, however, there are exceptions, more premium gi’s come with a gold weave or a honeycomb weave. Judo gis are often made of a double weave, however, there are a number of different type of weaves such as platinum, carioca, crystallised or star weave.
